LESSON 1: CLIMATE CHANGE AND VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
"Paint for the Planet is an exhibit and auction of children's art to launch the global United Nations campaign "UNite to Combat Climate Change". The event featured a selection of paintings from children around the world, showing their fears and hopes for the planet. These paintings are a powerful plea from children for leadership on climate change before it is too late."
Learning Goal: We are learning about the effects of climate change on children and vulnerable populations.
Vocabulary word: Vulnerable populations are groups of people that are more at risk because of different factors.

Minds On: Charlotte's Message
Action Item 1: On your handout, brainstorm everything you know about climate change (words, examples, stories, pictures). Choose your top idea to record on a post-it and add it to the class brainstorm.
Action Item 2: Watch Charlotte's message. What themes of climate change do you see? Add them to your handout.

Action Item 3: Watch the video below on Climate Change and Children. Using the video, as well as the flow chart below, answer the discussion question on your handout: What was one thing in the film/flowchart you hadn’t thought related to climate change?
Action Item 4: Now it's your turn to work for change. Using the space on the other side of your handout, get creative and create a design plan for a piece of art work that could be presented at "Paint for the Planet". Like Charlotte's work, it should show at least three effects of climate change.
Here are some starting points: hunger, education, healthcare, shelter, water and sanitation. You can also look at the Inspiration Gallery below for some more ideas but remember you are only required to do a sketch of your design.
