LESSON 2: GLOBAL URBANIZATION
Learning Goal: We are learning how the current trend of urbanization affects the environment.
Minds On: Urbanization and the Evolution of Cities
As you watch the video below, consider:
- What is an urban area?
- What is urbanization?
- What is agriculture?
- What is the Industrial Revolution?
- What is one way cities can change to allow for sustainable growth?
Urbanization is an increasing number of people that migrate from rural to urban areas, causing a growth of cities.
Urban sprawl is the spread of cities into surrounding rural (farm) areas.
Agriculture is farming of crops and animals.

Key Ideas
- Today, more than half of all people in the world live in an urban area, even though 100 years ago only 2/10 people lived in a city
- We went from hunter-gatherers to farmers (agriculturists) that allowed us to stay in one place (permanent settlements)
- Farming meant that not everyone had to look for food, so cities were developed
- Later we had trade between cities, and people came to cities as more jobs and opportunities became available
- During the Industrial Revolution, technology developed to allow for mass production of items, allowing even more people to move to cities
- Cities need to change to allow for increased population
