LESSON 9: NATURAL VEGETATION PATTERNS
Natural vegetation is plant life that is native (natural) to a region. Natural vegetation is very important:
- it puts oxygen into the air for living things to breathe
- it provides habitat ad food for animal life
- it provides shelter, medication and other products for humans
The type of natural vegetation in a region depends on two factors:
1) CLIMATE
Plants depend on sun, temperature and rainfall to survive. In the Amazon, there is a warm year-round temperature and a lot of rainfall, so plant life is a lush rainforest. In the Arctic, temperatures are cold and there is limited rainfall, so plant life is sparse.

2) SOIL
Different types of natural vegetation grow in different types of soil. More vegetation and types of vegetation grow when the soil contains minerals and nutrients. Vegetation also affects the quality of the soil.
Soil forms in layers, with the best soil being found on the top layers, where the vegetation has decayed to become organic material (acting like a fertilizer).
