UNIT THREE: NATURAL RESOURCES
Our Big Question
Where do Earth's resources come from, and will they last?
We will need to discover:
We will need to discover:
- What are the different types of resources available to us?
- How has technology affected how we use natural resources?
- How can we predict whether or not resources will be available in the future?
Changing Technology
Have you ever the saying: "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?"
Throughout this unit, we are going to look at a similar question: "If a resource exists in a world where no one knows how to use it, is it still a resource?"
A resource only becomes a resource when people uses it or its immediate products. Bees became resources when people learned how to use their product, honey. Rocks became a resource when people learned how to use them as axes and building materials. Whether or not people can use a natural resource depends on the technology they have available.
Think about it: What do you think this link between technology and resources means for future discoveries?
