LESSON 6: POLITICAL CARTOONS
While newspaper articles and editorials provided the public with opinions and information regarding the move towards Canadian Confederation, another important source of information was political cartoons. Cartoonists often used exaggeration and analogies to communicate public opinions and satirize current events.
One issue that Canadians remained worried about both before and after the Confederation was the possibility of a take-over by the United States, also referred to as annexation. The U.S. believed in Manifest Destiny at the time, and thought that they had the divine right to control all of North America. This political cartoon depicts the feelings of the Canadian people on the subject of Annexation.
Mrs. Britannia: "Is it possible, my dear, that you have ever given your cousin Jonathan any encouragement?"
Miss Canada: "Encouragement! Certainly not, Mamma. I have told him we can never be united."
What do you think this cartoon is saying? Who do Mrs. Britannia and Miss Canada represent? Who does 'Jonathan' represent?
